Mental Health Counselor – Catholic Charities, Part-Time

Reports to:    Programs Director

Summary:  25-29 hours per week.  Provides direct individual, marriage, and family counseling to clients within good standards of practice and within the framework of Catholic values, including the primacy of the family as a social unit.  Counseling is provided to individuals and families within the five counties: Lehigh, Northampton, Berks, Schuylkill, and Carbon counties and can include office setting, school setting, or parish setting.  Duties include, but are not limited to, intake and assessment of individuals and families, and service planning, along with marketing and promoting the program within the Diocese.  The ability to work in office and field settings is required.   

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides counseling services to clients in conformity with standards of good practice both as to quality and quantity;
  • Keeps accurate and relevant case records;
  • Complies with the mission, policies, procedures, and counseling philosophy of Catholic Charities and its Counseling Department;
  • Contributes to the overall quality of services provided by the Counseling Department and by Catholic Charities as a whole by activities such as but not limited to: participation in meetings and assisting other staff;
  • Will prepare quarterly/annual/monthly/weekly progress reports for submission to supervisor as required by agency and grant expectations;
  • Supervises interns/ students as assigned;
  • Flexibility in responding to the needs of the Counseling Department, Catholic Charities, and the Diocese of Allentown;
  • Marketing the Counseling program as needed or directed by Programs Director;

Educational Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in social work or other relevant profession, such as but not limited to psychology, or marriage and family therapy;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Willingness to work within the guidelines of the Catholic Charities’ mission and Church teachings;
  • Must speak at public functions at any location within the Diocese of Allentown;
  • Aptitude for working with individuals/families and managing difficult situations;
  • Aptitude to provide professional counseling services, including the ability to join with clients and the ability to perceive relevant factors, conceptualize according to professional models, and competently intervene in problems and systems of clients;
  • Aptitude to work collaboratively with other organizational structures, whether units of the agency, units of the diocese, or outside organizations;
  • Skills in client assessment;
  • Good communication and organizational skills;
  • Possess the ability to work independently, demonstrate flexibility and maintain confidentiality regarding Diocese activity;
  • Maintain a valid drivers’ license;
  • Must have the ability to pass all applicable clearances on a yearly basis.  Including but not limited to FBI, Child Abuse and State Police;

Physical Demands:

  • Nothwithstanding applicable ADA accommodations, while performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to: sit, walk and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone.  Use of hands to operate standard office equipment; with occasional reaching and lifting up to 10 pounds is required.
  • Employee is required to be able to drive their car or a Catholic Charities car to various home settings or community locations; the ability to drive to those locations safely is required, unless exceptions are explicitly recommended by the Program Director and approved by the Executive Director, or in keeping with ADA requirements.

Working Conditions:

  • General office setting, school setting, parish setting, or general community setting
  • Must be willing/able to drive anywhere within the 5 counties of the Diocese of Allentown and on occasion outside of the Diocese of Allentown
  • Must demonstrate respect and professionalism toward all clients in all interactions
  • Normal work hours are Monday through Friday
  • May be required to work evenings weekly to accommodate agency functions and/ or clients’ scheduling needs
  • May occasionally be required to work additional hours, including weekends, above and beyond regularly scheduled hours.
