Director of Religious Education

Queenship of Mary Parish, Northampton, PA is seeking a people oriented, faith filled person to form intentional disciples and foster evangelization through the management of the parish religious education programs for children, including sacramental preparation (PREP) for children. This is a part-time position active 12 months per year. As a member of the parish staff, the DRE works cooperatively with other staff members and leaders of parish ministry to foster an environment of prayer, hospitality, and education. The successful candidate must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Catholic Church and be committed to the authentic and orthodox teaching of the Catholic Church.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Prays daily for the ongoing conversion and deepening personal relationship with Jesus Christ for all people of Queenship of Mary Parish and the Diocese of Allentown.
  • Manages the parish religious education program including children’s religious education and sacramental preparation.
  • Manages registration and other administrative details of all aspects of religious education at the parish.
  • Recruits and oversees dynamic catechists who model intentional discipleship, who are passionate about evangelization, who demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Catholic faith, and who exhibit a lived and growing relationship with Christ.
  • Provides formation opportunities for catechists to deepen their relationships with Christ and cultivates a culture of discipleship and evangelization within the parish religious education community.
  • Evaluates the strengths and opportunities for growth within the parish religious education program and seeks to improve program elements as needed, in conformity with the guidelines of the Secretariat for Evangelization, Education, and Formation of the Diocese of Allentown.
  • Seeks effective methods of engaging parents in the faith formation and sacramental preparation of their children.
  • Schedules and facilitates faith formation opportunities for children and adults in the parish.
  • Ensures that all adults involved in the parish religious education program are in compliance with the Safe Environment requirements and policies set forth by the Diocese of Allentown Office of Youth Protection.
  • Meets with the pastor regularly to discuss matters related to the parish religious education and sacramental preparation. 
  • Implements policies and directives from the Secretariat for Evangelization, Education, and Formation of the Diocese of Allentown.


Educational and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Thorough knowledge of the Roman Catholic faith, as well as an understanding of evangelization and discipleship is required. Ministry experience with children, youth, and/or adults is required. Prior experience as a parish catechist, youth minister, or teacher is a plus. A high level of proven experience in working in a team environment along with extensive time management, project management and event scheduling is essential.  High attention to detail in planning is a must. Upon start of position, completion of a designated certification via the Franciscan University of Steubenville Catechetical Institute will be required.


Other Requirements:
Proven administrative experience, organizational skills, leadership, and interpersonal skills as well as creativity in program planning.  Ability to use technology relative to performing the duties of the office.  Ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be in good standing with the Roman Catholic Church and possess a willingness to work within an atmosphere of Christian principles.


Physical Demands: 
While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk, stand, bend and stoop.  They are required to talk or hear, both in person and by telephone.  Use of hands to operate standard office equipment; with occasional reaching and lifting up to 35 pounds.


Working Conditions:  
This position requires evening and weekend availability related to religious education classes, as well as liturgical events and practices involving the administration of the sacraments.
