Accounting Specialist, Diocese of Allentown

The Accounting Specialist, in concert with the strategic direction of the Diocese, is an exempt full time position that performs accounting functions in support of the Finance and Budget Office as needed. Completes special projects and other assignments, as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Maintain and reconcile fixed asset records and schedules, determine capitalized vs. expensed costs according to diocesan policy, and post monthly depreciation entries in the Business central accounting system.

2. Document budget process and budget timeline. Assist in the preparation of the annual budget.

3. Prepare the regular interim financial reports and analysis.

4. Assist in the preparation of annual audited financial statements.

5. Foster effective teamwork with other diocesan departments, Secretariats, and organizations.

6. Monitor, reconcile, and adjust where necessary, General Ledger accounts concerning the Investments (all funds), including monthly roll-forward reporting and journal entries to record related activity.

7. Monitor, reconcile, and record accounting activity concerning the Diocesan cemeteries, and create and issue reports to management.

8. Support other accounting reconciliations and reports as needed.

9. Perform other duties as assigned

Educational Requirements: Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred; or equivalent combination of education plus 5-10 years professional level experience in accounting, finance, or business administration fields.

Other Requirements:

  • Five (5) years relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of the Catholic Church with an understanding of its structures, functions, and institutions.
  • High Level of proficiency with Microsoft applications – Excel, Word, Outlook, and managing electronic files and folders.
  • Experience using accounting software, preferably Microsoft Business Central.
  • Above average level of analytical, problem solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to identify and implement process changes resulting in increased productivity and/or quality.
  • Possess the ability to follow instructions, work independently, demonstrate flexibility and maintain confidentiality regarding Diocesan activity.
  • Valid PA Driver’s License with good driving record.

Working Conditions:

1. Normal office environment. May be required to attend meetings or perform duties at other locations occasionally.

2. Normal workdays and hours Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm (total of 35 hours/week). May be required to occasionally work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays, or amended work hours with supervisor approval, i.e., due to seasonal, project, or other needs.

Pay: From $55,000.00 per year
