Forward With Christ Awards $200,000 in Grants

July 19, 2007

The Diocese of Allentown's Forward With Christ Endowment Fund has awarded more than 60 grants to parishes and schools in all five counties of the Diocese totaling $200,000.

The largest grant, $20,000 was awarded to St. Mary Church in Hamburg to assist in the construction of a social hall and religious education facility. $7,000 grants were awarded to McAdoo Catholic School for roof repair, St. Stephen Regional School in Port Carbon for building repairs and St. Joseph Regional Academy in Jim Thorpe for computer purchases.

The Forward With Christ Endowment was established with the proceeds of a capital campaign conducted by the Diocese of Allentown in 1984. A portion of the money raised in the Diocese's most recent capital campaign, STRENGTHENING OUR FUTURE IN FAITH, was also earmarked for the Forward with Christ endowment.

The funds are distributed through an application process, in which parish religious education programs and elementary and secondary schools apply for funds, and outline the project it will finance.

A five member committee, chaired by Reverend Monsignor William E. Handges, Pastor of St. Peter Church, Coplay, reviews the applications and forwards the recommendations to the Most Rev. Edward P. Cullen, D.D., Bishop of Allentown.
