Bishop's Statement on Papal Document

July 7, 2007

Below is the statement of the Most Reverend Edward P. Cullen, D.D., Bishop of Allentown on "Summorum Pontificum," the document released today by Pope Benedict XVI:

"As in every motu proprio the mind of the Pope issuing the document should be fully upheld. Our Holy Father expressed his mind in his accompanying letter to the Bishops of the world when he wrote that, the current Missal obviously is and continues to be the normal form of the Eucharistic liturgy.

Pope Benedict also saw this document as a means to more fully sustain the unity of faith or to attain it anew for those who have a found spiritual comfort and personal familiarity with the earlier form of liturgical celebration.
.
During the two months preceding the implementation date of the document (September 14) the Diocese through its Office of Worship will address the details of this document with the faithful of the diocese."
