Best Practices in Parish Stewardship Activities:
Myths and Realities

Keynote Speaker: Chuck Zech, Villanova University Center
for the Study of Church Management

Catholics are among the lowest givers to their church of any religion. A number of reasons have been cited for this. But the fact of the matter is that introducing stewardship is the one best things that a parish can do to not only increase member’s contributions of treasure, but also of time and talent.

There are a number of activities that a parish can undertake to introduce and promote stewardship. Some are intentionally stewardship driven. Others are not intentionally related to stewardship, but rather are routine parish activities that have the happy by-product of also developing stewardship. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence about which parish stewardship efforts are effective, and which are not. This presentation analyzes the results of a national survey of parishes to learn which activities are actually successful in promoting stewardship (realities) and which are not (myths).
