Michael Murphy is the Executive Director of the International Catholic Stewardship Council. Formerly, Mr. Murphy was a member of its board of directors and was the director of development for the Archdiocese of Detroit and the Archdiocese of Detroit Endowment Foundation from 1994 to 2007. During his tenure, he oversaw the largest annual appeal among dioceses in North America and the development of a comprehensive manual introducing parishes to Christian stewardship. “Called by Christ, Gifted by the Spirit,” has enjoyed much success in parishes and dioceses in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Latin America. A native Tennessean, Mr. Murphy was a practicing attorney and an instructor at the American College of Life Insurance and Tax Institute, and active in committees of the Tennessee and American Bar Associations. Besides his Juris Doctor degree, he studied in the divinity and theology programs at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a master’s degree in theology.

Responding to a Generous God: Discovering Stewardship in the
Sunday Readings for 2012 Expressing our gratitude for the Lord’s goodness is at the heart of Christian stewardship. But it shouldn’t occur only in our private prayer and formal worship. It should be rooted in every aspect of a steward’s life. The keynote address will reflect on stewardship in our Catholic life of faith as inherently a life of gratitude and, through the Sunday Lectionary readings for 2012, suggest that its goal is to understand what it means both to confess and live out faith in the God of Jesus Christ.
