Bishop to Attend March for Life in Washington
January 20, 2010
The Most Reverend John O. Barres, S.T.D., J.C.L., D.D., Bishop of Allentown will attend the annual March for Life in Washington, DC this Friday, January 22. The march marks the anniversary of the Roe versus Wade Supreme Court decision, which legalized abortion.
"The sanctity of human life is the foundation of all other human rights. My participation in the March and the other events surrounding it along with thousands of our young people and parishioners of every age is a crucial dimension of our witness to building a culture of life and a civilization of love," said the Bishop.
Besides the march, Bishop Barres will also participate in the Vigil Mass to be celebrated at the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on Thursday evening (January 21) and the Youth Mass scheduled for the Verizon Center in Washington on Friday morning.
The Bishop said he will also use the time in Washington to meet with students from the Diocese who will be participating in march events "to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life and to encourage young people to be dedicated to the gospel of life in their future marriages and professional lives."
