Below is the statement of Allentown Bishop John Barres on the death Tuesday night of Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua at the age of 88. Cardinal Bevilacqua was the Archbishop of Philadelphia from 1988 to 2003:

"On behalf of the priests and people of the Diocese of Allentown I offer my condolences and prayers on the passing of Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua who dedicated his life in service to the Church in the United States, most recently as the Archbishop of Philadelphia for 15 years.

To the Church of Philadelphia, please know that I am praying for the happy repose of the soul of Cardinal Bevilacqua and for the consolation of those who knew and served with him.

May he rest in peace."
