It is no easy task to discern a vocation in our noisy culture. We live
in a world not always accepting of the Gospel message or the call to
radical discipleship. A man who feels called by Christ to the ministry
of the priesthood will meet his fair share of obstacles. Externally,
he might face opposition from family or friends. He may be tempted by
the allure of worldly prosperity and financial success. He might be
duped by society's false image of the graced life of celibates. Internally,
he might deal with feelings of unworthiness or inadequacy. He may experience
a conflict between God's call and his own desires for a career or a
family life. No, the work of discernment is by no means easy.
Fortunately, God has not left us to our own devices. He has given us
His Holy Spirit, to work within us and guide us to the Truth. He has
given us a community of believers, the Church, whose prayers gain us
strength and guidance.
If you feel that God might be calling you to share in the Priesthood
of Jesus Christ, take heart and do not fear. Turn to the Lord in prayer
and thanksgiving. Consider yourself fortunate and blessed to have heard
his call. Commit yourself to fully discerning God's will, and trust
in His grace to provide safe passage to your destination.
